An Online Genealogy Guide by Owain Couch

An Online Genealogy Guide by Owain Couch

If you’ve ever wondered about your family history, but are unsure where to start, then you definitely need to check out this amazing online genealogy guide. Owain Couch started this blog back in June 2016 after researching and publishing his own family history with his father.

My first experiences of family history was when I was a young boy. My father would recite stories to me regarding our ancestors. He would tell me over and over and over again, and yet I was never tired of hearing them. Some of these stories would go back as far as the mid 1700s. He would tell me all sorts of anecdotes and tales from different branches of my family tree.

The Genealogy Guide is crammed packed full of resources, tips and helpful information to turn novices, interested in ancestry, into seasoned family historians.

It is with great pleasure, I introduce Owain Couch and for this case study.

Q. Tell us a bit about you and your website

I’m a family man in my late thirties with a lovely wife and two beautiful daughters. I work full-time but also manage to find time to work on my genealogy site, which is now making enough to cover the costs of being online. This niche is just so fascinating as you just don’t know who you will discover in your family tree, as well as what you will learn about them.

That’s probably why genealogy is one of the worlds most popular hobbies (coming in second after gardening).

Q. How did you first get into this niche?

Because of my father who recited many family stories and anecdotes to me and my two brothers when we were young. In later years I realized how important it was to record these. And so as I did I became addicted to discovering my family history.

After self-publishing my family history and holding in my hands a book containing a wealth of so much personal history I wanted to give back to the genealogy world. So I created the website to help others build and research their family tree.

Q. What has been your biggest success with your website to date?

There have been a few. From getting my first sale, to being complimented on my site and also seeing my rankings slowly increase over time.

Q. What has been the most challenging part of your journey so far?

I would say trying to actually find the time to work on my site.

It doesn’t help though when I learn new things and feel that I have to go back to old posts and improve them. But I feel whatever I am doing is a step in the right direction.

Q. Name the essential tools of your trade

  1. Google Analytics and Google Webmaster Tools because they can show me what posts people are looking at, what queries they are typing in, and generally my site’s overall performance.
  2. Sumo plugin – Use this for email marketing. This tool has definitely helped me to get my site more exposure and help with ranking.

Q. What do you think are emerging trends in genealogy in 2018?

DNA testing is definitely a trend that has seen a rise in the last few years and will definitely see improvements in 2018 and beyond.

Q. What is the one piece of advice you would give to someone thinking about starting a blog?

Build your site on a hobby or pastime that you are passionate about. Even for me when I was first starting out it was tempting to just throw it all in when it got too hard. I’m sure I would have given up completely if I’d chosen a topic I wasn’t passionate about. I would soon have given up when it got challenging.

If you are creating a blog just to try to create money, it won’t work.

I love genealogy research. I used to do a lot of it years ago, when I could afford the Ancestry membership.

One of my books is actually based on some genealogy research. 🙂

What free resources can you suggest for someone who wants to start a genealogy hobby but doesn’t want to invest a lot of money right away?

Owen seems to have picked a very interesting niche to use for his website. I’m glad that it is paying off for him and he gets to do something that he has a passion for.

I have some things that I am passionate about and consider hobbies, but I’m not so positive that I would be able to keep coming up with quality content to write posts about on it.

How do I know if I am actually going to be able to sustain my website off of my niche? Do you have any tips or insight on finding more to write about.

Thanks for your time in advance!

Hi CJ, thanks so much for dropping by, it sounds as though you would definitely benefit from the training at Wealthy Affiliate. The training there is fantastic and you are shown how to come up with unique and interesting content for your niche, that your readers will be looking for, through SEO and the Jaaxy Keyword Tool. In fact you’ll probably find that you end up with a completely different problem… a load of wonderful ideas, and not enough time in the day to write about all of them. Best wishes, Karen

Thanks Karen for including a case study on me and my site. I am very flattered that you have done this.

Hi Owain, thank you very much for the opportunity to interview for my website – it is great to be able to show people that Affiliate marketing can exist in many different niches – genealogy being one of them! Thank you for sharing your story. Best wishes, Karen
