This article is part of a series of case studies, where I showcase successful online entrepreneurs in a variety of niches and their inspirational business success stories online.
Q. How did you first get into your niche?
My first few niches were horrible choices. I just picked ‘weird’ things that I thought would be low competition. I think I tried to get into horse grooming products. My first two websites that made money were kind of cheating too. I just bought domains with the product name in the title and created a bunch of backlinks to them. One was on the topic of rehabbing a sprained ankle at home.
My first successful website was on the topic of a special kind of computer software that I was using while I traveled. This was the first time I felt like an ‘expert’ because I actually used the software, and was able to test it out in different countries, then report the test results as part of my reviews. I was officially the ‘expert.’
Q. What has been your biggest success or challenge in this niche?
My biggest challenge in this niche was staying on page one (of Google Rankings). It turned out to be a highly competitive niche, and this was back in the day when more backlinks meant more rankings. I’d rank on page one within a week, and be gone within the month. It was frustrating!
Then, after some Google updates, I lost a lot of my rankings. That’s why I don’t backlink anymore. These days, the main challenge is staying interested in updating the site. It still makes money, but my interest in the software has waned greatly since I don’t travel much anymore.
Q. Name three essential tools of your trade and explain why.
- You need a great keyword research tool to find low competition phrases. That’s my #1 recommendation for anyone trying to build a niche website and rely on organic traffic.
- I think you should also invest in some kind of image resource, whether that be a stock photo subscription, a camera, or an editing program like Snagit or Gimp. Having unique photos, or even branded photos for your website is really important to making your site look good, and also unique among all your competitors!
- If you’re going to spend money on your website, I’d also recommend a comparison chart plugin, or some kind of table creator so you can concisely show visitors how you rank products, and what are the strong/weak points of a product. They look good and can be powerful for conversions!
Q. What do you think are emerging trends in your niche in 2018?
Within the online marketing field, I think people are moving more and more to following brands over a longer period. Rather than searching in Google and spending time figuring out who to trust, and what websites are ‘legit’, people will find a person they trust and follow them.
After following 3-5 people, it’s hard to fit in any more information into your brain or any more reading time into your schedule. I’d like to eventually make my website into less of a single-serving article hub and more into an online brand that people can follow!
